Greek periplography aims to be the literary reflection of the old navigation manuals, which must have abounded in the heart of a culture with a clear seafaring vocation. But of that literary reflection we only preserve today eight writings, all of them far removed from their remote utilitarian origins. The rest remains submerged in what must have been a wide range of works scattered throughout Antiquity, especially in the Hellenistic period, lost works of which only twenty-nine are known to us in fragmentary state. Included here are the remains of four of them, all datable to the last third of the fourth century BC: the Periploi of Timagetos, Andron, Androsthenes and Kleon.

Francisco Javier González Mora holds a degree in Classical Philology (2015) from the University of Seville. He received his PhD, with the highest qualification, both at this site and at the Università degli Studi di Roma Tor Vergata (2021). Already as a doctor, he has been awarded a two-year “Margarita Salas” contract (2022-2024), the first of which he carried out a research stay at Sapienza Università di Roma and the second another at the University of Seville. His specialty is the study of Greek geographers, specifically that of the fragmentary authors, a subject on which he has published a wide range of works, with an outstanding presence in the main international debate forums.
